GRANGER: Though the Mirror Darkly

Issue One: "The Fracture"

When reality shatters, which version of yourself survives?

A brilliant young Auror's desperate gamble with forbidden time magic goes catastrophically wrong, hurling her consciousness into an alternate timeline where she wakes in the body of her darkest possible self—a trusted lieutenant to a victorious evil, dark, wizard King, intimate companion to his chief torturer, and architect of a fascist regime built on blood and terror.

Now she must survive in a world where everyone she loved is dead or broken, play the role of a monster who bears her face, and find a way home before she becomes the very darkness she's pretending to be.

EXPANDED SYNOPSIS

THE FRACTURE: Seven years after the fall of the evil, dark wizard King, Auror Granger leads an elite strike team through the ruins of a magical village, hunting remnants of his authoritarian regime. But intelligence has failed them—the ambush is a trap. Outnumbered and watching her team die around her, Granger makes a choice that will shatter reality itself: she activates an illegal time-manipulation device, hoping to travel back six hours and prevent the massacre.

But as she turns the device, a regime member's killing curse strikes it mid-activation. Two impossible magics collide. Reality doesn't just break—it fractures.

THE AWAKENING: Granger's consciousness snaps back violently, all at once. She's moving, but doesn't understand how or why. When her vision clears, horror dawns: she's in an intimate moment with Teddy, a known regime member. The luxurious chambers around her are filled with dark artifacts. Her scattered clothes bear the regimes insignia. And on her left forearm, stark and undeniable: the Dark Tattoo.

She's trapped in an alternate timeline. In a reality where everything went wrong.

THE NIGHTMARE: As Granger frantically searches the chambers, each discovery is more horrific than the last. Moving photographs show her standing victoriously over the corpse of her closest friend—a young man with a burn sigil who died saving her from a dark curse. Other images show her embracing the evil, dark wizard King himself, leading mass executions, standing beside Teddy as they burn villages together.

A hidden journal reveals the truth: in this world, grief twisted her into something unrecognizable. The King found her at her friend's funeral, offered her power where others offered only platitudes. She descended gradually, each terrible choice seeming rational in isolation, until she became his most trusted advisor—proof that brilliance transcends blood purity.

And Teddy? He's her lover. Her partner in atrocity. Two broken people who found twisted comfort in shared darkness.

THE CHARADE: Granger has no choice but to play the role. She attends the regime's council meetings, maintains the intimate relationship with Teddy, pretends to be the architect of occupation strategies. She must fool the King himself—an ancient, terrible intelligence who treats her with genuine (if twisted) paternal affection. She must navigate the suspicions of his paranoid lieutenant, a sadistic woman who senses something is wrong.

Every moment, she feels the dark magic of this body responding to her touch. Feels how easy it would be to simply stop fighting, to sink into the role, to become the monster whose life she's stolen.

THE COST: As the issue closes, Teddy returns to their chambers. Granger realizes she must maintain every aspect of the charade, no matter how it sickens her. She must use intimacy as a weapon, manipulation as survival. She must become, in small ways, the very thing that horrifies her.

And the most terrifying revelation? It's not as hard as it should be.
